Daffodils: The beauty of a spring flower

Daffodils, narcissus, grow in the spring. Spring is different in all areas of the country. Some of my farmer friends in Oregon are selling daffodils in March while in Fargo, North Dakota we are waiting until mid-May.

Watching them grow with tulips after a long cold winter brings delight to anyone who sees them.

You might remember them as bright yellow flowers growing up. However there are so many fun varieties that many cut flower farmers have been growing over the years. You can connect with farms in the fall to purchase daffodil bulbs to plant in your own landscape or keep your eye out with unique florists that work with sustainable flower farms to design with these spring flowers for arrangements or spring wedding flowers.

A note: the sap that drains out of the stem may cause skin irritation. When working with daffodils it is best to wear gloves.

How to process and care for daffodils:

  1. Cut them at a 45 degree angle to your desired length.

  2. Place daffodils in a separate vase and let rest for 4-5 hours. This will release the sap and not contaminate the other flowers.

  3. Do not recut stems after they have rested. If you do, you will have to have them rest again in a separate vase. Another option would be to place them in boiling water and leave until the water cools.

  4. For best results, use flower food in the water. Normally this comes in little packets with the flowers you buy. This can extend the life of your flowers for up to 7 days. If the florist or flower studio does not use flower food to reduce the use of chemicals, replacing the water every few days is just as effective.

  5. Enjoy your beautiful spring flowers!

Daffodils can be used in flower arrangements and are incredible in hand bouquets for spring wedding day floral designs.
