What does sustainability mean to Botanica Floristry?

Sustainability is defined by the dictionary as “avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintainand ecological balance”

The word sustainability is used a lot these days and I wanted to define it for Botanica Floristry.

For flowers:

*I grow flowers and greenery for our wedding and event floral design clients one because I love to go from seed to event knowing where the flowers came from. Two they are the freshest they can be by being harvested a day or two before I start to design

*Let’s face it zone 4 has a really short growing season so in all honesty I am able to use flowers from our gardens at the end of May with tulips and peonies and then things are growing and not ready until my mid July wedding floral designs through end of October. So how do I use sustainable practices during the off and growing seasons? I order and source my flowers as much as I can from American flower farms. Even California is closer than south of the equator and I consider that local. They continue to be harvested close to shipping and I get to know the flower farmers and what does well for shipping and longevity.

*I use seaweed and kelp to fertilize my flowers and greenery

*I reuse seedling flats over and over again until they are not useful which could be 5 + years of use which reduces the plastic in the landfills

Floral Design:

*I use chicken wire for my structures in installations and flower vases. When returned after a wedding or event, I can continue to use it continually.

*I use compostable packaging material for boxes, packaging, market bouquet wraps, Ecofresh which keeps flower stems hydrated in our market bouquets and wedding floral installations

*Any packaging when I receive locally grown flowers for our wedding and event floral design I reuse or recycle the best I can

*Compost clipping from flowers and greenery

These are some of the main attributes to what sustainability means to Botanica Floristry. If this speaks to you and you are looking for a florist for your wedding or event, please contact me! I would love to share in the love of sustainable practices in all your floral designs.

Until the next adventure,
Steph
