Trellis for vines on Flower Farm

Freelancing for Poppy Flowers at The Yard

Last week was primarily focused on the flower farm - my soul reviving space other than the flower studio

Also on the agenda - I’m a freelancer for a company called Poppy Flowers out of Washington D.C. I’m working for them twice this year. First up, wedding party flowers at The Yard in Moorhead, MN. What I love about working for them is that they are a women-owned company run by primarily women. They work with the couple as their design specialist, I design for the couple and get introduced to new flowers along the way. If you are looking for an a la carte option, I would highly recommend working with them and in turn, if your wedding is in Fargo/Moorhead area, I most likely will be your florist.

Flower farm duties last week:

  • Laying landscape fabric - because who wants to weed every day

  • Adding drip irrigation - because the babes need their water to grow tall without me hovering over them

  • Hardening off the seedlings before letting them out into the world - by far my least favorite part of this whole business. I don’t know why. It’s super easy but bringing the flower trays of seedlings inside/outside/inside for a few hours at a time for at least 5 days, increasing exposure each day, is like feeding a baby every 2 hours. Is it already time to bring them in? Didn’t I just do it? OMG did I forget to bring them in last night?

  • I decided to add bamboo trellis for our Clematis - summer and fall flowering, trailing Black-eyed Susans and of course the creme de la creme - my all time favorite - Sweet Peas. This looks way cuter than the 4’ stakes and way less plastic because I’m not using plastic netting.

I’m trying two different ways for the trellis this year.

    1) Chicken wire at the base level of the bamboo trellis

    2) 4 “stairs” of bamboo up the triangle trellis - this is too see if it’s enough to get them to climb or if I actually need chicken wire.
