Q & A #1
What does a work week look like for the owner of Botanica Floristry?
I was asked recently what my typical day/week looks like as a wedding florist. Do I eat, sleep, breathe wedding flowers and floral design? Pretty much! Here are answers to some of your questions:
How do you normally work?
At this point, I am mostly in front of my computer. Making sure emails are sent in a respectful timeframe, educating myself on sustainable floral design, better business etiquette, how to create a safe space with inclusivity, money, cut flower farming, social media, oh my the list goes on and on.
And after all that exciting stuff, I make sure to get my hand moving with a floral design or get the body moving with an outdoor activity, which is usually walking Henry our pup.
What is your schedule like?
We have kiddos that are part of virtual schooling this year and I work around their schedule. I aim to be focused on work between 8:30am - 3pm. I have later meetings and workshops (aka Clubhouse) on some nights. I really try to keep work away from family time, even though a lot of the time I am thinking on how to keep improving, seriously ask Bryan.
Mornings are my time to shine and am the most motivated and inspired. That’s why I get up so dang early to meditate and move my body virtually with my Mom at Mojofit Online or The Class - if you haven’t tried The Class, I highly recommend you do.
Do you do particular things on any particular day?
Not really. I was recently introduced to a dump list and that is helping me organize my days/weeks/months. I find that when something pops into my head, I want to do it immediately and drop what I was working on at that moment. Then I realized I am not getting anything done because I did 5 partial things for the 5 bigger ideas. Organizing my time is creating more focus and efficiency.
How many hours do you work?
Honestly I have no idea. I feel when you are passionate about your work, it seems that time doesn’t apply because there is no clock to punch and ideas come in at all hours of the day. You are always in it.
What’s important to you throughout your weekly schedule?
That’s easy - sleep, working out, connecting with like minded people, being out in nature, spending time with family.
When do you spend time with family or take time off?
Mornings we work together as a family to set the day. Ok that may sound like it butterflies and rainbows, but trust me we have our days! Working to set good habits for the kids, you know?! We always eat dinner together and that is when we connect the most. I try, key word here is try, to completely sign off of work by the time we eat dinner so I can focus on being together for the rest of the night. I also take off one day a week from work and social media.
During the summer we take time off to go to the lakes or camping wherever we can to replenish and disconnect from technology. I can always feel when I need a breather and listen to those signals as best I can.
Well there you have it….the typical week of a florist who recently took the leap to create a wedding floral company to serve and inspire her clients. I am going to set my calendar for a year from now and answer these same questions. I wonder what will change and what will stay the same?
Take care,
Steph
